transmediale 2k+12 in/compatible

Incompatibility is the condition arising when things are not working together. Given the current worldwide proclamations of crisis, be they political, financial, technological or environmental, it may seem as if incompatible elements and situations are everywhere, that everything is failing. Ironically, it is the supposedly ever-more compatible media-scape, where everything connects, that render such crises instantly visible. With the theme in/compatible, the festival probes the productive and destructive sides of incompatibility as a fundamental condition of cultural production.

The performance programme of transmediale reflects the relationship between “old” and “new” media. Employing media-archaeological approaches to the materiality of media, a range of works will be presented which use digital "listening devices" to analogue media and thereby lure out the “ghosts in the machine”. Centrepiece of the programme are performances from the legendary 1960s Joshua Light Show, featuring Supersilent (no) with Stian Westerhus (no), Oneohtrix Point Never (us) and as a special highlight, no other than Krautrock / cosmic / minimalism giant Manuel Göttsching (Ash Ra Tempel/Ashra, de). These events take place in collaboration with CTM.12 – Festival for Adventurous Music and Related Arts.

Performance by Flora Könemann

This is a Boys Club by Flora Könemann is an experimental on-going solo sound live project which connects electronic music and the use of analog devices such as tape players and typewriters in order to create a soundscape mainly consisting of repetitive sounds / loops plus pre-recorded and live spoken voice and noise layers.

The performance Liquid State Machine begins with the subtle influence across two distinct systems – the  kinetic-electromagnetic-noise apparatus of Martin Howse and the  analogue/digital projection-machines of Wolfgang Spahn – arriving at an ultimate feedback between light (waves) and sound. LSM presents a play with transformations between distinct physical system domains.

A double-bill of digital glitches and analogue feedback: ideomotoric chatroom by Billy Roisz with dieb13, Mario de Vega; The Glitch Moment(um) by Rosa Menkmann.

These two performances lure the ghosts from the image and sound machines: glitch-expert Rosa Menkman demonstrates the history of each of these digital artefacts while Billy Roisz, dieb13 and Mario de Vega interact with each other by way of an "ideomotoric circuit loop."

Vulnerability, molecular irritation, high frequency reception, and electromagnetic activity  amplification – Central to this event is the modification of the molecular composition of different materials through microwaves. During  the process, electromagnetic activity and high frequency fluctuations produced by the manipulation of microwaves are amplified and exhibited as a monolithic structure.
