transmediale.11 RESPONSE:ABILITY

In our post-future era of acceleration and densification of information, the state and nature of being live and online becomes one of the crucial definers of our social presence. Response and action are compressed into an existential here and now triggering a durée of continuous digital stimulation. With RESPONSE:ABILITY transmediale.11 explored the emerging qualities of liveness as a fundamental nature of our present digital culture.

With RESPONSE:ABILITY, transmediale.11 puts forward a call for action in terms how we live on and with the Internet today. Having become a central stage for the unfolding of our public and private lives, we must ask not only how this experience of online-liveness affects and transforms our bodies and subjectivities but also, importantly, what responsibilities and possibilities this engenders for participating in the continuous process of its evolution. Especially now, with economic and political mega-infrastructures striving for control and regimentation, threatening to make a smooth space into a striated one.

BODY:RESPONSE explores the (post-)human conditions of aggregation in the relation between body and technology and specific biopolitical and bio-economical trends affecting the (post-)human body and it's relation to the world.

Over the course of the festival, at three locations, in the Auditorium, on the Café Stage and in the HacKaWay Zone, hybrid manifestations of media will be switched on and their potential for experimental malleability will be tested.

Far from the often maligned image of hacking being targeted sabotage or rogue interventionism the HacKaWay Zone is the place where the notions of complex technological and societal systems are critically de- and re-constructed to reveal new and  alternative realities. Using the mechanisms of hactivist and tactical art practice the HacKaWay Zone brings process based and performative artworks together in a space activated by hands-on and interactive audience participation.

The Open Zone is a networked experiment with different social territories that, for the duration of transmediale.11, are occupied by artists and media activists. The strategic requirements of Open Culture are examined and can be experienced by visitors in open studios, project labs, exchange centres and experimental spaces located in the Foyer of the HKW.

In eleven curated film and video programmes transmediale.11 presents 58 historical and contemporary moving image works from 18 countries. This year's main focus is a reflection on the vital ways in which 20th century cinema – through its editing techniques and new visual culture – contributed to promoting the sense of growing simultaneity, ubiquity and acceleration which the Internet has since increased exponentially.

Additional highlights include a focus on the first live television broadcasts, specials on Lynn Hershman Leeson, a leading pioneer of interactive live media art, Ho Tzu Nyen, the transmediale Award Nominee from Singapore, and the second edition of the Arab Shorts project.
