Nhlanhla Mabaso was part of the Meraka Institute's Open Source Centre
initiative hosted at the CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial
Research) in South Africa, as well as Chief Information Officer at
different government departments (Public Administration and Home Affairs).
He served as the coordinator of the Free Software and Open Source
Foundation for Africa (FOSSFA), and is one of the directors of the
initiative Freedom to Innovate South Africa (FTISA) which promotes the
development of patent policy, legislation and practice that would benefit
innovation in South Africa. He holds a B.Sc in Computer Science and Applied
Maths from the University of Witwatersrand and a Masters of Business
