Born in Brooklyn, USA in 1934, Raphael Montañez Ortiz is a video artist. He has worked at the Museo del Barrio, the Museum of Computer Art, New York, and at Rutgers University, New Jersey. His sculptures are included in many museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, where he has twice been included in the Whitney Biennial. Raphael Montañez Ortiz ist the inventor of the 'scratch' technique where found-footage films are played back and fourth on laserdisks in a single frame mode. This technique was later adapted by many other film- and video artists. He lives and works in New Jersey, USA.
