Join us for the opening ceremony of transmediale 2014, where we introduce afterglow as a diagnosis of post-digital culture.
Together with a number of prominent guest speakers we will outline the “afterglow effects” that define the current ambiguous state of digital culture in between trash and treasure. Welcoming words will be given by Bernd Scherer (Haus der Kulturen der Welt), followed by an opening speech by Hortensia Völckers (Kulturstiftung des Bundes). One of the guests will be American sci-fi writer and cultural critic Bruce Sterling. In his key afterglow address, Sterling will outline the cypherpunk dystopia that digital culture has become and suggest ways to deal critically and creatively with its seedy geopolitics. After the ceremony, we invite you to enjoy the further opening programme throughout the whole evening at Haus der Kulturen der Welt. This includes the exhibition opening of Art Hack Day Berlin : Afterglow, a special screening of Luther Price's Utopia and the performance installation Ceremonial Chamber by MSHR. Read more.

The transmediale Marshall McLuhan Lecture invites a Canadian cultural figure, whose work expands
on McLuhan’s media theories in the context of contemporary culture and society, this year it is the Canadian writer and visual artist Douglas Coupland, who will also exhibit his postdigital Slogans for the Early Twenty-First Century at Or Gallery.

The conference examines geopolitical, infrastructural and bodily consequences of the excessive digitalisation.
The conference programme takes afterglow as a metaphor for the present condition of digital culture. The overall topics have been divided into three streams that each reflect a different aspect of digital culture in the afterglow. Hashes to Ashes reflects on the strategic infrastructure of the digital and the backdoors behind the glossy surface of connectivity. An Afterglow of the Mediatic focuses on the materiality of the digital from a geopolitical and geophysical perspective. Will you be my TRASHURE? speaks about the body of the digital, and its implication on identity, sexuality and pleasure.

transmediale and CTM's Vorspiel is a programme of distributed partner events, where a variety of partner venues invite local and international audiences to a series of exhibition openings, performances, interventions, artist talks and special events across the city of Berlin. The Vorspiel programme has been coordinated through reSource transmedial culture berlin. For transmediale and CTM 2014, the networks of reSource and other spaces in Berlin have been invited to jointly
develop a part of the Vorspiel programme in accordance with and oriented by the festival themes, Dis Continuity (CTM) and afterglow (transmediale). Read more.
Flusser Residency
Rosemary Lee new resident for the Vilém Flusser Residency Programme 2014. Pinar Yoldas opens solo exhibition.
For the Vilém Flusser Residency Programme for Artistic Research 2014, jury members Kristoffer Gansing, Annie Goh, and Daniel Irrgang have selected the new resident Rosemary Lee and her project Molten Media. In her practice, Lee connects various discourses in art, technology, and critical theory through a hands-on gesture of explorative experimentation.
With An Ecosystem of Excess, the Ernst Schering Foundation presents the first German solo show of the US-based Turkish artist Pinar Yoldas, who was the programme's artist in residence during 2013. Created especially for the Foundation’s Project Space, Yoldas’ installation shows new, speculative species born in an imagined post-human ecosystem. Read more.

Feiert mit uns gemeinsam die Eröffnung der transmediale 2014, bei der wir den Afterglow und Postdigitalität untersuchen
Zusammen mit einer Reihe berühmter Gäste werden wir bei der Eröffnung die “Afterglow Effects” vorstellen, die den momentanen, zweideutigen Status der digitalen Kultur zwischen “trash” und “treasure” definieren. Bernd Scherer (Haus der Kulturen der Welt) wird eine Willkommensrede halten, gefolgt von einer Eröffnungsrede von Hortensia Völckers (Kulturstiftung des Bundes). Einer der Sprecher ist der amerikanische Sci-Fi-Autor und Kulturkritiker Bruce Sterling. In seiner zentralen Afterglow-Ansprache, wird Sterling die Cypherpunk-Dystopie behandeln, zu der die digitale Kultur geworden ist und Wege vorschlagen, wie man mit ihrer schäbigen Geopolitik kritisch und kreativ umgehen kann. Das transmediale und CTM Vorspiel ist ein Programm von Partnerveranstaltungen, die über ganz
Berlin verteilt sind. Eine Reihe von unseren Partner-Venues laden das Berliner und internationale Publikum zu einer Fülle von Ausstellungseröffnungen, Performances, Interventionen, Künstlervorträgen und Sonderveranstaltungen in der Stadt ein. Das Vorspiel-Programm wurde von der reSource transmedial culture berlin koordiniert. Für die transmediale und CTM 2014 sind das Netzwerk der reSource sowie weitere Veranstaltungsorte in Berlin dazu aufgerufen worden, in Anlehnung an die Festivalthemen (Dis Continuity bei CTM und afterglow bei der transmediale) gemeinsam das Vorspiel-Programm zu entwickeln. Rosemary Lee neue Stipendiatin des Vilém Flusser Residency Programms. Ausstellung von Pinar Yoldas, Stipendiatin 2013.
Für das Vilém Flusser Residency Programme for Artistic Research 2014 hat die Jury, bestehend aus Kristoffer Gansing, Annie Goh und Daniel Irrgang, die Künstlerin Rosemary Lee mit ihrem Projekt Molten Media ausgewählt. Das Projekt Molten Media von Rosemary Lee verbindet unterschiedliche Diskurse aus Kunst, Technologie und kritischer Theorie durch die Geste eines eingreifenden Experimentierens. Mit An Ecosystem of Excess präsentiert die Schering Stiftung die erste deutsche Einzelausstellung der in den Vereinigten Staaten lebenden türkischen Künstlerin Pinar Yoldas, die 2013 Stipendiatin des Programms war. Die von Yoldas eigens für den Projektraum der Stiftung geschaffene Installation zeigt neue, spekulative Spezies, die ein imaginäres posthumanes Ökosystem hervorbringt. Mehr lesen.
